Keep open and Keep no option

I had a question about how you use the Keep open status in Horizon vs the Keep No on the cow detail page.

When we enter a pregnancy check event we can set the repro status to Keep open. On the cowcard, under Edit cow details, we also can use the Keep No option so the cow shows up on the right reports but not for breeding etc.

I have noticed some farms only use the preg check Keep open and do not touch the Keep No in the cow details. I have always liked using both because it keeps the lists cleaner.

How was it originally intended to be used? Always happy to learn from how others set it up.

  • Yeah, so the way I’ve always understood it on Horizon is pretty simple.

Keep Open is really just a repro setting. When you do a preg check and you set a cow to Keep Open, you’re basically telling Horizon: ‘Don’t suggest breeding her again right now.’ She stays in all the normal lists; she just drops out of the breeding advice. Handy if she’s pregnant, recovering, or you just don’t want her bred for a bit.

Keep No on the cow details page is more of a long-term management thing.

That one means: ‘She’s off the breeding list completely.’Horizon still keeps her in the production and health reports, but she’s done with repro. Some farms only use Keep Open because it’s quick. I prefer using both keep Open for temporary stuff, and Keep No when a cow is definitely not getting bred anymore. It just keeps the lists cleaner and makes Horizon less cluttered.

  • yeah we do it similarly.

On our place we kinda do it the simple way.

Keep Open is what we use when a cow is pregnant or we just want Horizon to leave us alone about breeding her. It’s more of a ‘not now’ button and keep No is the ‘she’s done’ button. Once we decide a cow isn’t getting bred again, she goes on Keep No so she doesn’t keep showing up in the repro lists.

  • for us we use both, the keep open one more than the keep no, but both work well in our case.

  • Hi , your understanding seems to be right. Keep no means that this calf will not be kept in the barn (setting from calving). Keep open means that the cow will not be breeded again. So the cow or calf will appear on transfer task and if need you can transfer  the cow for the right reason. Usually bulls will be set on keep no.
