grass intake during peak summer

Hi all,

Here in the Northern hemisphere its peak summer, and that means that grass in the regenerative state. The palatability and quality has impact on dry matter intake.

What are your tips to make sure that feed intake and milk production stays on track during this period?

I would love to hear your thought on this subject!

  • Here in Wisconsin, we see the same challenge every summer. When the grass matures quickly, we balance it out with some higher-quality alfalfa haylage and keep a close eye on fiber levels. We also try to move cows more frequently through paddocks to keep them on younger, more palatable growth. It’s all about timing and making sure the ration stays consistent even when pastures change fast.

  • With just 9 cows, I notice summer grass can lose quality fast if I let it get ahead. I try to rotate them often and mow down any overgrown patches for winter feed. I also supplement with a bit of grain to keep energy levels steady. Small herd, but every liter counts, so I watch intake closely during the peak growth period.

    1. Consistent feed delivery – Cows love routine. We make sure feed is delivered at the same time every day and pushed up regularly so there’s always fresh feed available.
    2. Quality ration & energy balance – We work with our nutritionist to make sure the transition diet has enough energy and digestible fiber. Adding glucogenic energy sources can help reduce ketosis risk.
    3. Comfort is key – Comfortable stalls, good ventilation, and plenty of space at the feed bunk all help cows eat more and stress less.
    4. Fresh water access – Clean water at all times. It sounds basic, but it makes a huge difference in intake.
    5. Close monitoring with Lely Horizon – We keep an eye on milk fat/protein ratios, rumination, and activity alerts. If Horizon shows early signs of trouble, we step in right away.
    6. Smooth transition period – Good dry cow management before calving pays off after calving. Healthy cows eat better and milk better.
