Healthy calves start with the little things — like a clean, dry navel.
It might seem minor, but umbilical infections (navel ill) are one of the most common calf health issues and can seriously affect growth and future milk production.
Most infections happen in the first two weeks, especially if calving conditions aren’t ideal. Here are a few quick checks and tips to keep your newborns off to the best start
What a Healthy Navel Looks Like
-
Dry, shriveled, and firm
-
No swelling, pain, or smell
-
About thumb-size by one week
Watch Out For
-
Swelling or heat
-
Wet or sticky navel
-
Discharge or foul odor
If you see any of these, it’s time for a closer look — infection could already be setting in
#TipTime: Keep It Clean
-
Dip right after birth — use 2% chlorhexidine or 7% iodine
-
Clean, dry bedding is a must
-
Check daily for the first week
-
Don’t transport calves with a “wet” navel — they’re still vulnerable
Dr. Dave Renaud from the Ontario Veterinary College says it best:
“Calves with an umbilical infection have higher mortality, lower growth, and reduced survival to first lactation.”
Why It Matters
A few minutes of care can prevent costly infections and vet visits later on. It’s all about setting your calves up for success from day one.
How do you handle navel care on your farm? Do you dip once or multiple times — and what product works best for you?
