Modernizing for the Future: The journey behind our New Software Platform  

The journey towards our new product began with a clear realization: the existing software foundation, originally developed over 25 years ago—had reached the limits of its capabilities. As we looked ahead to align with Lely’s long-term goals, it became evident that a complete rewrite was necessary to ensure the software remained maintainable, scalable, and ready for the future.  

Our primary objective was to create a seamless transition to a new platform while introducing incremental improvements along the way. The result is a modernized code structure that not only enhances development speed and efficiency but also lays the groundwork for more agile innovation.  

A key focus of the redevelopment was data utilization. With the new system, all robot-generated data can now be transmitted to the cloud. This advancement empowers service organizations to monitor performance and diagnose issues remotely improving responsiveness, reducing downtime, and ultimately delivering better support to our customers.  

This transformation marks a significant step forward in our commitment to innovation, reliability, and customer-centric solutions.  

The new product comes with several significant improvements:  

  • Future-proof Hardware 

The new hardware platform (GCB2) is significantly more powerful and faster. Combined with an upgraded operating system, it ensures readiness for future developments.  

  • Enhanced Security 

Cybersecurity has been improved by adding extra layers of security to the robot, complying with legal requirements.  

  • Easily perform updates 

Technicians can update the Astronaut with a single press of a button on the robot. After the update is completed, the robot can immediately be taken into operation.  

  • Remote Diagnostics 

Our technicians can remotely check the status and performance of the robot, aiding in improving customer service.  

One of the results we received from test farmers is that the robot reliability improved. They have noticed a lower frequency of critical alarms compared to the previous software system.
