Hi all,
This week I got a good reminder to keep an eye on the length of the cup cords (ropes). When a cord gets too long, the point where the chain connects to the rope ends up past the rollers at the bottom of the arm. The cup is then not pulled back the way it should be, and the number of attachment attempts goes up.
In the video you can see the teat cups being pulled. Look under the arm and you'll see the rope has gone past the rollers.
What we did to fix it:
- Shortened the cup cord
- Rinsed the cord guides
- Calibrated the robot arm
- Calibrated the teat cup offset
- Adjusted the Y position of teat cups and did a final teat cup offset calibration.
To prevent:
- Look at the cords during your daily robot clean
- Once a week, cut off frayed ends, re-tie and check the length
- If attachment attempts suddenly go up on one robot, check cord length early. It's a quick thing to rule out.
Hope this saves someone a few failed attachments. Happy milking!
