• The cow is in early lactation; 
• The cow has a medium to severe chance of sickness; 
• Increased fat/protein ratio (the ketosis advice is less reliable in a mixed herd); 
• Milk yield is lower than predicted milk yield;  
• Drop in eating time;  
• Drop in rumination time. 

We recommend considering all these indicators before deciding whether to apply a treatment. The BHB test remains the most reliable method for confirming ketosis and deciding on treatment.In short:

The fat/protein ratio is a indicator for detecting ketosis, but it should always be interpreted together with the other parameters listed above.

Regarding Jersey herds and the threshold

At the moment, it is not possible to change the fat/protein threshold. But the ratio is higher than 1.3.
The ratio is calculated as:
Fat % / Protein %
A value < 1.0 means that fat % is lower than protein %.

Examples:

• Fat 3.2 %, Protein 3.4 % → 3.2 / 3.4 = 0.94 → Inversion
• Fat 3.8 %, Protein 3.3 % → 1.15 → No remark
• Fat 5.0 %, Protein 3.0 % → 1.67 → Ketosis remark

Balizador prático que eu usaria no meu rebanho, se fosse definir um único número de alerta: Usaria 1,55 como ponto de corte operacional para Jersey. Daí em diante, considere todos estes indicadores que você mencionou antes de decidir se deve ou não iniciar um tratamento, juntamente com o teste de BHB.

• Alertas de queda de produção baseados em energia corrigida (ECM), não apenas litros.

• Permitir metas reprodutivas específicas por raça.

• Parâmetros de CCS e mastite (Ter CCS fisiologicamente um pouco mais alta, reagir diferente à infecção intramamária), algoritmo de alerta adaptado ao padrão Jersey.

• Curvas de Lactação Específicas, Curvas de referência específicas por raça. Algoritmo de comparação baseado no padrão Jersey.

• No momento do parto, e alerta adaptado ao padrão Jersey.

Makes sense that it’s not just based on fat/protein. If the system also looks at early lactation, milk drop, eating time and rumination, then it’s at least looking at the full picture and not just one number. That’s good. But in a Jersey herd, that fat/protein ratio still needs careful interpretation. Jerseys naturally run higher fat, so you’ll hit higher ratios quicker than Holsteins. A 1.4 or even higher doesn’t automatically mean she’s in ketosis in a Jersey herd, specially if she’s milking strong and looks fine.
