What's your feed space (cm) per cow?

There is a lot of research on conventional systems to say that cows in head yokes should have >=75cm/cow. This is usually when cows are milked 2-3Xdaily and fed out once or twice daily. In robot systems, cows may feed at different times BUT they still all go up together at feedout times. You could argue they need slightly less space though, and even less with Juno and less still with Vector. What are your cm/cow and which system do you have? Is the feed space ever empty at that amount?

  • That's a great comment Nico. Routines and human variability mean that timing and errors can occur and empty space always results in performance and resilience impacts. Perhaps we should focus on "empty space per 24 hours" and monitor by GoPro: that way we would negate the space per cow model. Good thought!

  • Hi Mike, on our farm we aim for around 75 cm of feed space per cow. We’re using a robotic milking system, so cows can come to the feed whenever they want, but we still see quite a lot of cows at the feed fence when fresh feed is pushed up. At this amount of space, the feed area is rarely completely empty, but we don’t see much competition either.

  • Lovely! Sounds like they have a lot of freedom and little competition. It's hard to achieve 75cm in a lot of barns I see, when there's a feed fence, a double row and a single row in a 2-robot module, so I'm imagining you have 2 double rows and a fence either side of the stalls. A great setup for that amount of space!
