Rotational Grazing

I have about 5 acres of pasture in Ohio that’s been mowed for years but previously supported cattle. I’m looking to bring it back into production for dairy cows, ideally using rotational grazing to maximize yield and soil health.

I know pasture quality, rest periods, and management practices all affect stocking rates, but I’m finding wildly different numbers. Some say you can’t have more than 2 cows on 5 acres, while others claim they run multiple cows (plus other livestock) on even smaller areas with good management.

For those with dairy operations: what stocking rates have you found sustainable in Ohio (or similar climates) when using rotational grazing? Any research or proven guidelines you’d recommend?
