What is the importance of good silage management?

We all know how important good silage management is for good feed quality and animal health. Working with the Vector system, and therefore working with feed blocks, this is even more important! Feed blocks are often criticized. People claim that leaving a feed block in the kitchen for several days is bad for the feed quality. However, it was proven that if the blocks are not scalding, there are almost no nutritional losses. Scalding can be prevented by correct silage management. The way a crop is harvested significantly impacts its quality. Ensiling requires proper packing and sealing to maintain anaerobic conditions for fermentation. During feed-out, maintain a consistent rate of at least 1.5 meters per week, and keep the silage pit smooth and straight to minimize rough edges and air pockets. Regularly monitor the temperature and quality of the silage pit, especially at the cutting edge and top layers. Use temperature probes and take samples to detect potential issues early.
